Connecting Base Stations over Metro Gigabit Ethernets

چکیده
Emerging high-speed metropolitan Ethernets create new opportunities to save costs when converging data and telephony services. However, connecting GSM and UMTS base stations over metropolitan Ethernets require these networks to meet stringent QoS requirements in the presence of bursty data traffic. To investigate this problem, we have probed ETH’s campus network, which spans the metropolitan area of Zurich, for several weeks. From our results, we infer that lightly-loaded metropolitan Gigabit Ethernets with average utilizations below 1% presumably have a potential to carry traffic from GSM/UMTS base stations.

Synchronizing Circuit Emulation Adapters to Connect Umts/gsm Base Stations over Metropolitan Gigabit Ethernets
Connecting UMTS/GSM base stations over Metropolitan Gigabit Ethernets has a great potential of cost savings. However, packetizing base stations’ signals to emulate telephone circuits over Gigabit Ethernets additionally requires synchronization between the sending and receiving circuit emulation adapter. In this paper, we present and evaluate open source implementations of synchronization algori...

Packet switching technologies such as Gigabit Ethernet or IP over WDM are gradually replacing the traditional telephony (PDH/SDH) networks due to their ability to transport data traffic at very high rates. Connecting UMTS/GSM base stations over Metropolitan Gigabit Ethernets has a great potential of cost savings. In our scenario telephony base stations are connected to the core PDH network thro...

Recent developments in transmission and switching technologies create new opportunities to converge data and telephony services. Given the emerging deployment of metropolitan Gigabit Ethernets, one aspect of interest is to employ these networks to connect legacy PBX and GSM base stations to the core telephony network. This protects investment in existing infrastructure and creates new revenues ...
